A Standard Search allows you enter information into one or both of these fields and will carry out a search against the information entered. If you require the search to be more flexible and a check to be performed against a partial sequence of the data entry, then click the boatfax SmartSearch™ box option (see below). If you want to search across additional territories – and remember many boats are shipped from one territory to another to avoid detection – then click “Include One Extra Territory” or "Search All Territories" and select from the list of territories you wish to add (see below).

3. The boatfax SmartSearch™ option
This provides the very highest level of search criteria. It Extensively checks the database for possible matches against sections of the data you have input. A % match will be calculated against each field entered and these will be totalled to show the overall match confidence. Select SmartSearch™ If you want the best search function and especially if you have any doubt about the integrity of the information you have, as SmartSearch can also detect the likelihood of characters being fraudulently amended (eg an 'F' being changed to an 'E'). The table below provides an indication of how to interpret the results:
| Total % Returned | Confidence |
0% | No match found |
7% | There is a partial match, but it is very unlikely that the item has been reported stolen or scrapped |
15% | There is a slight possibility that the item has been reported stolen or scrapped |
30% | The item may have been reported stolen or scrapped |
60% | Likely match - the search criteria are similar to a vessel that has been reported stolen or scrapped. |
75% | Close match - it is likely that the item has been reported stolen or scrapped |
95% | Very close match - it is very probable the item has been reported stolen or scrapped |
100% | Complete match - the item has been reported stolen or scrapped. |
Note: A match only indicates a level of confidence. It should not be read as a definite unless you get close to 100%.
4. Add Territories
Searches are performed within the Territory that you are logged into or where you reside. Additional territories may be added. These are either granted free of charge if you are a Silver or Gold level subscriber, or can be purchased at the time of processing a search request.
Searches are carried out within the region/country you reside in. However many stolen boats are often brought in from other regions. If you wish to check whether a boat or asset is registered as stolen in another region tick the box and select the territory corresponding to the region you wish to add to your search area, or alternatively, select 'All Territories'.
The data held by boatfax is constantly updated and we strive to maintain a complete marine database. New entries may take up to 72 hours to become active, whilst data is being validated. We strive to work with all major marine manufacturers to retain original serial number information on our comprehensive database.
Whilst every effort is made to provide an up-to-date comprehensive database and to keep information current,
boatfax cannot be held liable for errors, omissions or exceptions. Users are encouraged to carry out additional information checks to verify the status of the vessel or equipment. See
